How To: Dress To Kill And Make A Killing
In my previous blog post I discussed 5 Reasons Why Creating A Powerful First Impression Is Profitable For Your Business
I emphasized on the importance of adopting the mentality that -
You are your Business. You are your Marketing. You Are Your Branding.
With the advancement of internet technology, attention is becoming scarce across consumer markets. The advancement of internet technology has created an information rich world where content/informartion are easily available and are in overabundance.
People have to divide and allocate their attention among the overabundance of information which are plated in front of them. This is negative for businesses as they have to always find ways to grab as much attention possible from their consumer markets. Some businesses even go to great length and invest dollars after dollars not in their production cost but in “buying” attention.
Thus a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.
Attention has become the scarce resource of the Information Economy - Wired Magazine
Now people are spoilt for choices with the plethora of information they can ever excess to find solutions and solve the problems they seek. With having many choices, attention is being divided among many other choices to pick the best possible solution/information. As technology develops further with new gadjets and applications, people get more distracted. Not mentioning interruptions from phone calls, instant messaging and the obsessive need to refresh your browser to check for incoming emails.
This simply mean one thing -
You have to CAPTURE your consumers attention and you have to capture it FAST. If it’s possible you should try as much as possible to CAPTURE and RETAIN your market’s attention.
The internet is fast growing alongwith the online businesses. Hence you’re constantly competing with other online marketers to vie for your market’s attention.
How do you capture and retain your market’s ATTENTION?
You need to STAND OUT.
There are many ways to skin a cat when it comes to marketing on the internet. However what would give you optimal ATTENTION in an inexpensive manner would be implementing Social Media marketing strategies like grabbing ATTENTION on writing quality content on blogs, uploading videos of yourself, uploading pictures of yourself, being active on social sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Forums and e.t.c. These are avenues which are highly ATTENTION GRABBING.
This is where Sexy Female Marketing comes to fusion.
Being in the business world for years myself, I have observed that many female entrepreneurs and work at home moms are going four ways:
1) Becoming less conscious and adventurous about the way they dress. (Sticking to blacks, blues and greys.)
2) You kill all femininity to be more like the men in business for the primary reason to “FIT IN”
3) You go the other extreme and want to outdress every other women. (Why must you put yourself through so much emotional distress?)
4) Finding no reason to dress up at all.
Are any of the above description fits you?
Many women tend to believe that in order to climb to the top they have to present themselves in a way that dilutes their femininity or at best, works hard to make sure it isn’t a distraction.
Governor Palin doesn’t do that. Red patent leather peep-toe pumps are solid evidence of that. I think she’s using prettiness and cuteness to her advantage. And without any hesitation.

The point here is not about trying to outdress anyone. It’s dressing to reflect your stature, your sense of authority and for the job to which you aspire.
It’s about exuding confidence from within. It’s about letting YOU, your personality shine.
We all need an edge in business to be and stay successful. We may have the right qualifications and experience, yet we also need to communicate our individuality within the bounds of what is appropriate to be able to stand out from the crowd. How else do you pick a star in a field of equals?
You can’t deny the fact that the better we are dressed, more effective will be our impression on others.
1) I’m not asking you to ditch your black, blue and grey suits.
Add more colours to your wardrobe. Be more adventurous and go gold, go pink, go yellow or go green. Gone were the days when image consultants would tell you to stick to “professional” colours. It’s the internet world baby! We ought to do business, be social and have fun!
Imagine dressing up dull boring “Safe” colours like black or blue or grey with not much accesories whatsoever. Upload your video - Consumers take a pass at your video - Consumers skip your play button - Consumers Get distracted and move on to more interesting videos. You lost a potential wave of attention there.
Now, Imagine uploading videos with you being more adventurous and different in dressing. Consumers would hold her glance at your video thumbnail - Consumers get curious - Consumers click the play button and BINGO! You’ve scored.
Of course the quality of the content of your video must retain her attention. With creating the “WOW” factor across the internet, grabbing that attention would spread you and your business like wild fire! It’s typical viral marketing when one person shares your video with another and another and soon enough the entire internet!
See the difference it makes. If you need to reaffirm what I’ve said, observe your internet surfing habits and you’ll realise that the type of pictures and thumbnails on videos, podcast and other social media avenues affects your attention span.
Note* Please ask honest opinions whether the colours suit you as each of us have different auras to colours. You want to be fun and adventurous not to the point of clown-ish.
Here are some of my preferences:

I’m telling you that if you want to survive in this competitive world, you have to do whatever you can to get noticed. By capturing and retaining others’ attention, you’ll be more inclined to always get what you want.
2) Outdated clothing, outdated hairstyles, outdated accessories may suggest to the people around you that you are outdated. They might even think that your business ideas are outdated as well.
If Michelle Obama can pull gorgeous outfits off and be named top 10 Best Dressed in People’s magazine, you ought to follow suit. Michelle Obama unlike Governor Palin has no fashion stylist whatsover and doesn’t splurge insane amount of dollars on clothes, shoes or accesories. All she did was buy the latest fashion magazine and observe fashion trends.
You can then search on the internet, the various online retail shops which suits your budget and likings which mimics designs in the fashion magazines and trends.
Go get a fashion magazine now or google - “Latest Fashion Trends”

3) Overly sexy business attire may suggest that you are a flirt and are willing to “sleep your way to the top.” Thus attires like Super sexy short mini-skirts is inappropriate in business. You can save this for a girl’s night out at the club.
believe if you want to be sexy, you should be tastefully sexy and not slutily sexy.
There’s certainly a difference between wearing low clevage top with decent pants than a low clevage top with micro short skirt and fishnet stockings. It’s about showing some skin not going commando ladies.
If you’re more conservative, it means not showing much skin but emphasizing more on figure hugging outfits.
In business, I am sure you want to be respected as a woman right?
3) Get a haircut which suits your face and attitude.
Your hairstyle is a representation of you. The head is the crown of the body.
Make sure you find a really good hairstylist. I recommend a hairstyle which is stylish yet easy to maintain. If time is a factor for you, you would not want to waste time spending 30 minutes getting it in place. ANNOYING!
4) Have you thrown away or donated clothes that do not fit you? Have you put aside clothes which belongs to the dinosaurs? If no, DO IT NOW! In a midst of change, get rid of anything that would clutter your thoughts into moving forward.
Trust me. You’ll feel a new sense of motivation by just clearing your wardrobe.
Change and Colour represents a breath of new life.
5) Keep your heads up, shoulders back, close your eyes and feel a surge of confidence overpowering you with that new colourful clothes and hairstyle which defines you.

Be Different, Be Unique, Stand Out and at the same time let your Personality SHINE.
I know, you’ve heard it thousand times but I am stressing this MORE as I know that even though you’ve heard image consultants guiding you to Dress for success, you still don’t.
As Web 2.0 advances, more online businesses are being setup in rocket time and the harder for you to grab your market’s attention in this competitive world, remember you need to STAND OUT.
Hiding your face behind the computer doesn’t help. Uploading pictures and videos of you looking haggard or dressing outdatedly doesn’t help either. You, a woman have the unfair advantage of having great physical attributes to be adventurous in personal grooming thus use it to your outmost advantage.
If you can’t be motivated and take the effort to nail your personal grooming, there would be little success moving forward. It’s like building a pyramid, tackle the foundation first and built your way up to the apex.
Express yourself through your clothes and help your fashion help your business in return.
Go SHOPPING and have a wardrobe makeover ladies!
Who says running a Business can’t be FUN?

First off, I’d like to say that it’s always fun to read your articles. Secondly: I don’t really dress up all that often, and I think the reason I don’t (or people like me, for that matter) stems from the idea of feeling like a moron. I happen to own a shirt I refer to as my “date shirt” (never worn on an actual date) which looks great on me. But wearing it almost feels ridiculous in a “nobody expects me to dress up” kind of way. Overcoming expectations is important if you want to succeed and create a good first impression. You have to learn to set your own expectations.
Expressing yourself through your clothes is definitely a step towards more success. If you can’t represent you, who will?

@Corey Freeman:
I understand where you are coming from especially if you’re behind the computer all the time. The need to dress up would be non-existent.
U wld be like - “Why should I dress up? What’s the purpose? It’s not as if anything special or important is happening?”
However if you look it in the eyes of an opportunist, she would see that being well-groomed wld increase her self-worth and net-worth!
You’ll never know when you wld have encounter with door of opportunities before you.
It’s all in the mindset and perception. I admit it’s the hardest part to make sense of
However you said it well - If you can’t represent you, who will?
Take that concerted effort to bring about a step by step positive change in your life.
All the best, Corey!
P.S: Wear that “date” shirt! You’ll never know wht cld attract with it? Then take some pictures, upload on fb or your blog post or record a video with it. Feel the whole experience of stepping out of your comfort zone and living by your expectations and not others.
